Gabriel Latchin Trio Plays Gershwin

British pianist, composer and bandleader, Gabriel Latchin has made a name for himself as one of the UK’s finest musicians, praised by critics and world renowned musicians alike. Known for his effortlessly swinging feel, deep repertoire and compelling performances, Jazzwise recently described his playing as “impeccable… the clarity of his lines evoking something of Hank Jones or Tommy Flanagan”. High praise comes also from The Guardian, writing he is “the best straight-ahead jazz pianist to appear in the past few years.”

2025 sees the release of the trio’s fifth album, The Man I Love – a heartfelt tribute to the enduring work of George and Ira Gershwin. The collection of favourite songs from America’s preeminent composer and lyricist are presented here with new arrangements, drawing on influences such as Claude Debussy, Bill Evans and John Coltrane. This builds on the success of Latchin’s previous four records – 45 million streams to date – which have been met with critical acclaim worldwide: “this is a masterpiece that shows the true skill of his composition” – Jazz Japan.

Featuring highly-acclaimed NYC drummer Joe Farnsworth (USA) and first-call bassist Jeremy Brown (UK), the music demonstrates the great strides taken by Latchin since the release of his 2017 debut record Introducing: “Elegant, tasteful and swinging!” – Renée Fleming.

An in-demand sideman across a range of projects, Latchin was personally invited by Christian McBride to perform with himself and Renée Fleming at Wigmore Hall.

Calum Gourlay was born in Glasgow and grew up playing in Fife Youth Jazz Orchestra, The National Youth Jazz Orchestra of Scotland and Tommy Smith’s Youth Jazz Orchestra, in which he was the very first bassist selected from across Scotland aged 16.

In 2004 he was the only bassist enrolled for the jazz course at The Royal Academy of Music. He graduated with first class honours in 2008.
He has held the acoustic bass chair with the Scottish National Jazz Orchestra, under the direction of Tommy Smith, since 2006. He has also featured prominently with Tommy Smith’s own quartet.

Since 2018 Calum has been a professor of Jazz Bass at Trinity Laban Conservatoire of Music & Dance.

His debut album ‘Live at The Ridgeway’ (2015) received rave reviews from the UK jazz press, not least because of its confident format – a solo, live recording in front of an intimate audience.

In 2019 Calum released his first quartet album ‘New Ears’ on Ubuntu records. In 2020 the album was nominated for both a Scottish Jazz Award and an Ivor Novello Composer Award.

Born in Manchester, England, Steve developed an early interest in music and began playing drums at age 14. By age 19, he was performing with local jazz groups. By the time he was 23, Steve had become the “first call” jazz drummer in Manchester, working with Scott Hamilton, Art Farmer and UK artists during their engagements in the city.

In 1996, Brown moved to London and began working as a sideman with many of the capitol’s finest musicians including engagements with jazz greats Harry ‘Sweets’ Edison and Conte Candoli. During the next 4 years his playing career went from strength to strength and Steve was the winner of the ‘Drums’ and ‘Rising Star’ categories in the 1999 British Jazz Awards. He has gone on to win the British Jazz award in 2001, 2003, 2005, 2007, 2009, 2011, 2012, 2013, 2014 & 2019.

In 2000 Steve joined the Quartet of the great jazz saxophonist Scott Hamilton. For the last nineteen years, he has toured internationally with Mr Hamilton. He is featured on his last five recordings for Concord records.

In between his engagements with the Scott Hamilton Quartet Steve has continued to perform and record with a wide variety of artists including Benny Golson, Benny Green, Carl Fontana, Barry Harris, Junior Mance and CharlesMcPherson.
