Programme:

MacMillan: Piano Quintet “We Are Collective” – World Premiere

Scottish traditional music arr. The Maxwell Quartet

Franck: Piano Quintet in F minor, Op. 14

The MacMillan Piano Quintet was commissioned by Haddo Arts and co-commissioners Sound Festival Ltd, Spitalfields and Cheltenham Festivals. This performance will be the World Premiere of this work, in the presence of the composer.

The composer writes about the new piece:

“The title is a play on the ideas of the togetherness of ensemble playing, as well as a scepticism about collective rather than individual and personal thought. The work is dedicated to civic and joyful political types who recognise the importance of instruments in cultural and artistic instrumentalism.  The music has a light, tongue-in-cheek and sardonic flavour, with wisps and allusions of half-forgotten old Scottish Songs, [ending] with passing jazzy or bluesy references. ”

This concert will be recorded by the BBC for future broadcast on Radio 3.
