A Place to Play 2021

Event information

Our cultural heritage grows from our ability to create and to play, to be free, to rediscover the child within all of us. If you were given the run of Haddo House, to its nooks and crannies, where might your imagination lead you? What secret spaces would you find? Who might you encounter? How would you play…..?

Written from a child’s perspective, Haddo – A Place to Play (Song for Haddo 2021) will create an orchestrally accompanied song-cycle to which children and young people everywhere can relate, in a place far removed from our contemporary obsession with online platforms, internet and social media.

Haddo Arts have commissioned Music Co-OPERAtive Scotland (McOpera) and composer Peter Kemp to create and deliver this project to the young people and primary-aged children of Aberdeenshire as part of the Song for Haddo programme. In collaboration with the National Trust for Scotland and Covid-19 restrictions permitting, the project will incorporate site visits to Haddo House to explore the ‘secret’ spaces and childhood haunts featured in the songs.

Professional baritone and vocal specialist Andrew McTaggart  and professional McOpera musicians will rehearse the young performers either via online platforms or in workshops, dependent upon Covid-19 restrictions. The schools’ performances will be professionally recorded and compiled to create the final performance for broadcast online.
