Event information

Haddo House has long since been a place to play and sing music. But it’s also been a place where children have lived and ‘played’ in their own way, calling it their home.

It’s the May concert in the time of June and David Gordon and Haddo House is full of guests busy practising and rehearsing.  But what about the children? It’s been raining for weeks and the children are stuck indoors and getting more than a little grumpy.

With all of the grown-ups busy and preoccupied, the children are left to their own devices.  What will they do to keep each other occupied in this big house? There are plenty of rooms, corridors and staircases for some hide and seek perhaps, with the lure of some forbidden places? How about an impossible train trip to some unlikely destinations – anything is possible with a little imagination?

When the careering about is over, there’s always plenty of scope at Haddo to find a quiet corner and frighten each other with a scary ghost story. Eventually though, when it’s time for bed but sleep just won’t come, who doesn’t love to sit by a window and gaze up at the stars in wonder. Before too long, the dawn will bring fresh hope and new opportunities to begin playing all over again?

Written by Peter Kemp, A Place to Play is the latest Haddo Arts‘ commission from Music Co-OPERAtive Scotland (McOpera) for the young people and primary-aged children of Aberdeenshire and is presented in collaboration with the National Trust for Scotland

Three local primary schools, singers from Haddo Voices (the junior section of Haddo House Choral & Operatic Society) and a group of young string and brass players from Aberdeenshire Academies will take part in fun workshops and rehearsals before coming together at Haddo to rehearse and give two performances on Thursday 13 October 2022.

A Place to Play is conducted by professional baritone and vocal specialist Andrew McTaggart.
